2025 CMS and CPT Updates: A 2-Part Series

PART 1: 2025 CMS Update

In this session, we will cover changes to the Medicare program finalized in the November final rule to the 2025 Physician Fee Schedule to Medicare physician payment and quality reporting program policies that are expected to take effect on January 1, 2025. Key topics include: 

  • Payment rate: The 2025 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) conversion factor

  • Payment of the G2211 add on code with expanded service pairs such as Annual Wellness visits and preventive services

  • Ending certain telehealth flexibilities extended through the end of 2024 

  • MIPS Value Pathways for six new specialties 

  • New Coding and payment for caregiver training, advanced primary care management services, cardiovascular risk assessment and management, post operative care and behavioral health 

PART 2: 2025 CPT Update

This session will focus on The American Medical Association’s (AMA) 2025 update to the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code set, which will take effect on January 1, 2025, introduces significant changes across multiple categories to keep up with advances in healthcare and technology.  

These updates, comprising 420 changes, aim to enhance the precision and applicability of CPT codes as new procedures and technologies emerge in medical practice.  

  • Surgery: Thirty-three new codes have been added for surgical procedures, including those involving autografts and arthroplasty, along with other specialized surgical techniques. 

  • Radiology: Six new CPT codes focus on MR safety assessments for implantable devices, reflecting the increasing need for tailored imaging protocols in patients with medical implants. 

  • Pathology and Laboratory: Thirteen new codes have been introduced, such as for cytogenomic analysis, to capture more precise diagnostic lab work.  

  • Medicine: Outdated COVID-19 vaccine codes are being removed, and a current vaccine administration code, 90480, is being integrated. Additionally, there are several new codes across varied procedures, including updates in the administration of vaccines and preventive services. 

  • Category III Codes: New codes have been added here for innovative, emerging medical technologies, such as one for the placement of a bone marrow sampling port.
